James C. Miller, MBA - Roundtable Moderator

James C. Miller is the Founder and President of PharmSource Information Services, Inc. A preeminent expert in bio/pharmaceutical outsourcing, Jim established and presides over the pharmaceutical outsourcing industry’s principal online information database of contract service providers, PharmSource ADVANTAGE. He is editor and publisher of two newsletters, Bio/Pharmaceutical Outsourcing Report and Emerging Markets Outsourcing Report.

Jim serves as an Editorial Advisory Board member for Advanstar Communication’s Pharmaceutical Technology and BioPharm magazines. In addition, he writes regular columns on outsourcing for Pharmaceutical Technology, Contract Services Europe and BioPharm magazines. A member of the judging panel for the annual European Outsourcing Awards, Jim also is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), and also serves on its Technical Committee.

Jim formerly was Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Circa Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a solid dose manufacturer. Prior to that, he was President of St. Anthony Publishing, a provider of database information services for the health care industry. Jim also was a consultant in corporate strategy with the Boston Consulting Group. He holds an MBA degree from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

Jim Mullen

Mr Mullen is Patheon's Chief Executive Officer. He was most recently with Biogen Idec, Inc., where he held the position of CEO and President for ten years. Biogen Idec was formed from the merger, led by Mr. Mullen, of Biogen, Inc. and Idec Pharmaceuticals, to form one of the world's largest biotechnology companies. Prior to the merger, Mr. Mullen was the CEO and President of Biogen, Inc. from 2000 to 2002, and Chairman, CEO and President until 2003. Prior to that, Mr. Mullen held various operating positions at Biogen, including Vice President, Operations, and several manufacturing and engineering positions over a nine-year period at SmithKline Beckman, Inc. Mr. Mullen's 30-year career includes extensive experience in pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing, mergers and acquisitions. Mr. Mullen's breadth of industry experience includes biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals. Mr. Mullen holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a Master of Business Administration from Villanova University.

 

Thomas Zimmer, Ph D
Pharmacist

SVP of the Corporate Division Quality & Environm. Health and Safety

He studied pharmacy at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main and made his PhD in Pharmaceutical Technology.

Since 1981 Thomas Zimmer is with Boehringer Ingelheim where he had several positions in the Pharmaceutical Development and Pharmaceutical Manufacture and in the Area Management Operations (Americas, Europe). He was also Head of the Project Production Alliance Europe (PAE ) and later Head of Pharma Operations at Boehringer Ingelheim France. Since 07/2000 Thomas Zimmer is Senior Vice President of the Corporate Division Safety, Quality & Environmental Protection.

Peter Strumph

Peter Strumph was named Senior Vice President, Business Head Pharmaceuticals in 2011. In this role, Mr. Strumph oversees global product development, marketing, sales, manufacturing and operations for Codexis Pharmaceuticals business.

Mr Strumph joined Codexis in 2010 as Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations with twenty years experience in senior manufacturing and operations management in the biopharmaceutical industry. From 2007-2009, he was Chief Executive Officer of Nile Therapeutics, a cardiovascular company. Previously, he held executive leadership positions for ten years at CV Therapeutics, most recently serving as Senior Vice President, Operations. At CVT, he oversaw all CMC (chemistry, manufacturing and controls), quality and clinical operations functions. He also held senior operations and manufacturing management roles at Biogen, and staff and manufacturing roles at Bio-Rad Laboratories and Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Mr Strumph also served in the Navy as a Lieutenant on board the USS Enterprise.

Mr Strumph has extensive experience developing strategies which depend on sustained high performance from contract manufacturers and clinical research organizations. At Codexis, the business strategy relies on contract manufacturers and is, itself, a contract manufacturer supplying enzymes and intermediates to pharmaceutical companies. Mr Strumph holds a Bachelor's degree in Systems Science and Engineering and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania.
